Amethyst is the February birthstone that brings clarity when your mind’s a mess and peace when your heart’s worn thin. The amethyst February birthstone is a lifeline for artists, overthinkers, and late-night feelers. With its dreamy purple tones and crystal calm, the amethyst color holds both fire and peace in one cool, collected glow. The meaning of amethyst runs deep: it soothes the storm, sharpens intuition, and reminds you you’re not here to live and feel your life to the fullest. This purple gemstone quietly keeps you sane.
You are your own artistic muse.
That’s the greatest thing about you.
You make your downfalls a force to shoot you up.
Amethysts are for artists. Not just the visible ones, also those who keep their poetry secret. Spilling your story often means sharing your pain. And you may have chosen to hide that behind carefully barricaded doors instead. Keeping the untold stories and poems coiled inside of you, to the point of more pain. Letting the chores of the day kill the dreams of a lifetime, leaving you to grieve the stories you’ll never get to tell. So much inside of you and not a clue how to pour it all out.
But what comes from suppressing your emotions is an internal fit of rage. So pouring it out you must - ideally before the rage sets in.
the Greek ametusthos, meaning “not intoxicated”, a.k.a. “on top of my shit”
In Greek mythology, amethyst is the amulet to keep yourself from going overboard. Drunk, but not hammered. Loving, without the lust. Living, instead of existing. We mortals confuse the line and will bend over backwards getting our balance back. Amethyst is there to get it just right.
Have you heard of Bacchus, the wine god? And the poor mortal, all too human Amethyst? In his typical obnoxious drunk fashion, Bacchus sent beasts to kill Amethyst - for absolutely no reason. Poor Amethyst prayed to the goddess Diana, who then turned her into a rock white crystal. Bacchus, regretting his deed a little too late, poured fine wine onto her as an apology. Sadly for Amethyst, she’s now just a violet stone.
Jealousy, rage, passion - whatever the source of your creative force is, amethyst keeps you afloat. It cools down rage and lifts imagination. It’s a joyous grounding color that balances warm red with cool blue. It’s a creative stone to calm down your nerves.

Our amethysts are ethically sourced from:
Brazil, Indonesia, Uruguay
Absolutely. The amethyst birthstone is a story written in minerals and pressure, shaped by time and place. The same way our surroundings influence who we become, the origin of your February birthstone shapes everything from its hue to its energy.
Different origins create different amethyst personalities:
- Uruguay gives deep, saturated purples
- Brazil offers lighter lilac tones with flashes of red or blue
- Indonesia is known for dreamy lavender with a soft, misty glow
- Zambia creates vibrant violet stones with excellent clarity
Each source has its own vibe. The stone's depth of color, clarity, and sometimes even the way it catches the light is tied to the land it came from. And that affects how it feels, how it holds space for you.
At Gardens of the Sun, we only work with amethyst from known origins. Because we care how it looks, and because we believe every gem should come with a story you can stand behind.
Tough Love level:
7 Mohs scale of hardness with good to very good toughness - as a member of the quartz family, amethyst is as hard as dust (and dust is pretty hard and can make permanent scratches on surfaces). Because of its hardness, amethyst can handle the wear and tear of everyday scratches - an ideal everyday ring. When you’re storing it, make sure to keep it away from stones on a higher number in the Mohs scale, such as rubies, sapphires, or diamonds. Find out more about hardness vs toughness here.
Common treatments:
Often heated to deepen color, remove smoky appearances, or create exotic shades. Find more about common gemstone treatments here.
Cleaning, care, and caution:
Amethyst is safe enough under ultrasonic cleaner, unless it was dyed or had fracture fillings. Use warm, soapy water, preferably made from natural ingredients, like our lerak jewelry wash. Steam cleaning isn’t recommended.
Amethyst is a variety of quartz, a mineral stone so abundant it exists amongst sand and dust. Amethyst’s purple color comes from the combination of iron and nature’s irradiation. The amethyst color ranges from soft lilac haze to deep velvet purple. Depending on its origin, amethyst can come in opaque burgundy or pale lavender shades.
Chevron Amethyst
A combination of purple and white quartz, banded together in V-shape lines. Since you get both purple and white quartz, you get the best of both worlds.
Green Amethyst
Also named prasiolite. Green amethyst is rare in nature. Enough heat for enough time can turn purple amethyst green, and men have worked out how to speed up this process with irradiation. A natural prasiolite is pale green in color, and mostly comes from a single location in Brazil.
Rose de France Amethyst
A pinkish lavender to pale lilac shade. But it’s neither a pink amethyst nor a light tone purple amethyst. The industry has been having trouble pinning down a name unto it because it has incredibly rare chemical properties. In a nutshell, it’s a dichroic amethyst with pink body color, but which radiates a purple hue.
Red Amethyst
When excessive amounts of iron is present. The color itself comes from hematite inclusions on the outer layer, giving it a deep, red-brown look.
Rutilated Amethyst
A rare quartz characterized by the presence of brown needle-like inclusions. Kinda reminds you of those antique amber with millions-year old insects trapped inside.
Siberian Amethyst
A rich velvety purple with blue and red flashes, the deepest, most saturated and most wanted shade of amethyst.
Ametrine
A twin stone of amethyst and citrine – purple on one end, deep yellow on the other. It’s a quartz with different ‘impurities’ on each side.
Amethyst comes in a spectrum of purples, and each shade carries a slightly different vibe. You can choose the one that matches where you're at or what kind of energy you want more of or which version of your Aquarian self you want to support.
Color and origin shape how this stone feels in your hands, and for someone who values meaning and individuality, those details matter.
Lavender Amethyst: Soft and calming. It brings emotional ease and supports you when you need a slower pace. This is a solid choice when you’re processing a lot or seeking peace.
Deep Purple Amethyst: Strong color and strong energy. It supports big-picture thinking, sparks ideas, and helps you follow through. Good for deep focus and momentum.
Chevron Amethyst: Has white quartz bands running through it. It brings a steady, organized energy that helps turn scattered thoughts into something you can actually build with.
Where your amethyst comes from adds another layer:
Brazilian Amethyst: Known for its clean color and balanced feel. It supports emotional stability and focus when you’re building something long-term.
Zambian Amethyst: Deep in tone with a grounded presence. This variety brings a feeling of protection and quiet strength, especially useful when your energy feels pulled in too many directions.
Uruguayan Amethyst: Bright, punchy, and full of life. It carries a bold energy that supports creativity and authentic expression.
Each variety has its own rhythm. Choose the one that feels aligned with what you’re navigating right now. Let the color, the texture, and the weight of it guide you. The stone you’re drawn to usually knows something you don’t yet have words for.
If you’re born in February, amethyst is your anchor and your wings. A gemstone for the thinkers, the dreamers, the ones who feel everything a little more deeply.
This gem is about clarity. Creativity. Self-trust. It helps you quiet the noise and listen to your own voice, the one that already knows the way. Amethyst is a guide for those learning to sit with their feelings, turn chaos into art, and stand in their truth without apology.
From soft lavender to inky violet, amethyst’s color reflects your emotional spectrum - the softness, the shadows, and the light. Whether you’re navigating heartbreak or rediscovering your purpose, amethyst holds space for all of it. And helps you alchemize it into something beautiful.
So, why amethyst jewelry? Because your story deserves to be honored. Because healing can look like softness and power, all at once. Because a gemstone that grows in stillness might be just the thing to help you find your own.
