Topaz is one unique stone.
The name was believed to refer to the Greek island Topazios, a small island in the Red Sea, where people thought the stone came from. Yet, this is a misnomer.
Topaz was mined from the hidden caves in Sri Lanka and merchants took her to Egypt and Greece. Nowadays, topaz is mostly found in Brazil, Russia and the United States (Utah, California, Texas).

Topaz ranks 8 on Mohs scale of hardness with ‘poor’ toughness. In other words, topaz is pretty good at resisting scratch, but will break easily. Topaz is best worn as your special occasion jewelry. For everyday use, consider earrings or a necklace and use the bezel setting.
The colors of topaz are often achieved through specific treatments. You can safely assume any blue topaz is irradiated. Pink and red topaz tend to be heated. Sometimes sparkling colors are achieved through coating, and then called mystic topaz. This treatment is easy to spot, and to avoid.
Cleaning, care and caution for topaz:

Imperial Topaz
The imperial topaz comes in pink (super rare in nature), and pink orange. A lot of pale imperial topaz is heat treated to gain a darker hue.

Brown Topaz
Sometimes confused with smokey quartz, brown topaz is whiskey-colored and has a more golden luster.

Mystic Topaz
