SEPTEMBER BIRTHSTONE: SAPPHIRE

Sapphire is the September birthstone, and she wears that crown like she was born for it. Most people know her for that deep royal blue, but sapphire actually comes in nearly every color. She’s the birthstone of wisdom, loyalty, and truth. The queen of clarity. The stone of still waters and sharp minds. But what makes sapphire unforgettable goes way beyond her looks.

It’s said sapphire helps you go way down, to see what’s buried beneath the surface and gently pull it up. Even the hard, crusty bits we’d rather ignore. She’s like a telescope for the soul. Zooming in. Clearing it out. Focus, rinse, repeat. Always in the name of truth.

She’s seen history unfold and still shows up shining, sharp, and ready to whisper: You’ve got this.

september birthstone: sapphire personality

She’s royalty, surrounded by lore and legend, but she hides it in her smile. You know it’s there, though.

It’s a knowing smile, grounding and still. Wise and focused. Because she knows.

She knows her powers, she knows her purpose. She reminds you of yours.

She’s an old soul, and she’s been there before.

Sigh. Where to even start?

Sapphire is the gem of gems. The holiest of the holies. A magnificent stone of insight and strength that’s carried kings and queens, poets and priests. She holds history. Faith, focus and fierce independence all in one gem.

At first glance, she gleams with power. But look closer, and you’ll find the real magic: kindness, discipline, healing and hope. That’s her secret sauce.

More than anything, she’s a reminder: speak up, trust yourself, move with purpose. Royalty without the drama. Wisdom without the lecture. Power that doesn’t need to shout.

Sapphire was the original love rock. Not diamonds.

september birthstone jewelry: colored sapphire rings

In the early days, engagement and commitment rings would feature a sapphire. The diamond ring was actually a marketing ploy - a very successful one, but that’s another story. It’s not like the sapphire to hold grudges though. The gem lends its power to help transmute negative thoughts into higher purpose.

Just take a look at Lady Di’s legendary 12 carat oval Ceylon sapphire. This engagement ring was a witness to her defiance. Her first rebellious act out of many.

Here’s why: the sapphire was a ready stock ring.

Although she herself was royalty, Lady Di’s sapphire ring was not the one and only. Like, anyone could buy it (assuming they had $60k). Over the years, sapphire became her confidant whenever she needed to make a statement (a deliciously bold statement, mind you). If there’s anyone who understands the healing power of a sapphire, it’s Lady Diana.

FUN FACT

the Latin sapphirus, Greek sappheiros, and Sanskrit sanipryam, meaning ‘blue stone’.

See, the sapphire knows her stuff,  because she's been around

Sapphire is powerful both when you’re at your highest and at your lowest. It gives you buoyancy through challenging times. It keeps your head high for hopes and your feet on the ground as you meddle in uncertainties and handle difficult truths. Sapphire is a powerful stone to gather strength. A gem to believe in yourself. A rock to truly show up.

Use sapphire to get you out of a rut and be a maverick of your own kind. Sapphire belongs to the highest of the high. But as powerful as it is, use it with care. Because remember: you already have everything in you to overcome challenges and move forward.

Sapphire cleaning, care and caution:

Both treated and untreated sapphires are generally very durable and can be cleaned with an ultrasonic or steam cleaner, with the exception of lead glass filled sapphires. Still, the safest way to clean your sapphire jewelry is with warm, soapy water. For natural cleaning, use our soap nut wash.

SAPPHIRE COLORS

Sapphires and rubies are are both corundum. They're basically the same gemstone, except for the pinkish red being called ruby

how do sapphires get their color?

Ever wonder how sapphires end up in so many colors? It’s chemistry, earth magic, if you will.

Sapphires are made of corundum, a crystal that’s usually colorless. But toss in a dash of trace minerals (a pinch of iron, a sprinkle of titanium, a whisper of chromium) and the color changes. That’s how sapphires get their hues: from quiet little impurities doing the most.

Blue sapphires? Thank the iron and titanium duo. Together, they make that deep, dreamy blue that everyone thinks of first.

Yellow sapphire and green sapphire contain trace amounts of iron,  comes from the presence of chromium, iron and titanium, and s get their color from trace amounts of chromium.

Yellow sapphire and green sapphire? That’s trace amounts of iron. The more iron, the more golden or grassy the color gets.

Chromium’s the romantic one. A little chromium gives you pink sapphire. A lot turns it red, and when that happens, it’s no longer a sapphire, it’s a ruby.

Vanadium and chromium like to mingle too. They make purple sapphire shifting into lavender sapphire or violet sapphire depending on the mix.

Then there’s orange sapphires. These show up when iron and chromium get together, creating warm, juicy hues. And if the balance is just right, you get the rare and beloved padparadscha sapphire. It’s peachy, coral a little sunset, a little papaya... hard to define and even harder to forget.

So every sapphire carries its own signature. Its color is the story of the elements it met underground.
