Thinking of buying an engagement ring in Bali? From locally mined diamonds and Indonesian sapphires to custom gold rings made by hand, there's a lot to discover here.
But how do you know you're getting what you pay for? Is that 18K gold really 18K? Can you get an independent diamond certificate? And how do you find a jeweler who takes ethical sourcing seriously?
We've spent over a decade working with Indonesian gold miners, gemstone suppliers and local goldsmiths. We've learned a lot about what goes into making a ring, and what you should look out for when buying one.
In this guide, we'll share what we've learned, what to ask before buying an engagement ring in Bali, and how to find a ring that reflects your values as much as your love.
Bali draws couples from all over the world. Maybe it’s the air that lands on your skin like a blanket, the fresh food, the sound of world class waves and the scent of burning incense. Bali is where love stories unfold in the wild. Where cliffside sunsets, lush waterfalls and barefoot ceremonies set the scene.
Maybe you've been planning your proposal for months, or maybe being here has made you realize there's no reason to wait. You’re already in one of the most romantic places on earth. Choosing yourengagement ring in Bali makes that moment even more personal. It’s a chance to anchor your proposal in a place that already holds so much feeling, with a ring that reflects your story.
The island of the gods has a long tradition of jewelry making, especially goldsmithing and silversmithing. In places like Celuk, generations of craftspeople have worked with precious metals, passing techniques and skills through their families.
But there's more to an engagement ring than the craftsmanship. Indonesia is also home to natural diamonds, sapphires, rubies and other gemstones. When you buy from a jeweler who works with known-origin materials, your ring can carry a connection to the people and places where those materials were found.
And if you're looking for a sustainable engagement ring, Bali can be a wonderful place to have one made. Just remember that being handmade or locally produced doesn't automatically make jewelry ethical. Where the materials come from matters just as much.
Whether you plan to propose with a ready ring, or design one after you pop the question, we’ve got you covered.
“Custom made engagement ring - such a lovely team, thanks for everything. We are super happy to have such a great memory of Bali, you and our proposal.”
- Jan, Austria
Need a ring, like… now? We got you.
Our ready stock gold engagement rings and silver engagement rings are crafted by hand and mostly one of a kind. These are all made with ethical gold and traceable gemstones, including Indonesian diamonds and jungle sapphires.
If you're in Bali, book a visit to our Sanur showroom to see which rings are available. You can try them on, look at the gemstones in different light, and see how they feel on your hand. You'll find natural diamonds, Indonesian sapphires and other gemstones in designs ranging from simple solitaire rings to unusual, asymmetric settings. Each one comes with a story and a whole lot of heart, and we plant five trees for every single piece of jewelry you purchase from us.
We’d love to help you find the right ring. And if turns out the fit isn’t perfect, we’ll resize it or offer to exchange it for another ring that fits better.
If you're buying a surprise ring, it's worth checking the size before you purchase. Resizing generally takes 2–4 weeks, and not every design can be resized.
Best for: Couples who want an engagement ring ready for a proposal during their Bali holiday.
“It has made me the happiest man as my girlfriend said "yes" to my proposal.”
- Adrianus, Indonesia
You want to choose something meaningful yourself. Something that shows how much thought you've put into this proposal. But you're not sure about her ring size, whether she'd prefer yellow gold or white gold, or what setting she wants. And what if she has a completely different ring design in mind?
Why not choose the gemstone first?
You get to surprise her with something you've chosen yourself. And she gets to have a say in the ring she'll wear for the rest of her life.
At Gardens of the Sun, we offer diamonds from Indonesia, Botswana, Canada, and Australia, and sapphires and rubies from Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Australia, Madagascar, Thailand, and Tanzania. Or go for something more unique, like spinel, garnet or aquamarine.
Pick the gemstone that makes you think of her. We'll tuck it into a ring box, ready for you to get down on one knee.
And once she's said yes? That's when the fun of designing her engagement ring begins. Together, you'll choose the metal, setting, band width, texture and any extra stones and design elements. We’ll confirm her ring size, show you what's possible, and turn that gemstone you fell in love with into a ring she'll love wearing.
Best for: You don't know her ring size, she has her own sense of style or you'd love to design the engagement ring together.
“Gardens of the Sun went above and beyond to make the whole experience so memorable.
From the custom design, the updates and care to ensure we made the deadlines for our travel plans, Maharani and her team worked tirelessly to produce one of the most beautiful pieces of jewellery I’ve ever seen.
The attention to detail, the box, wonderful little hand drawn cards with the kindest message right to the quality of the finished engagement ring.”
- Cristina, United Kingdom
Not sure about her ring size or design taste? You’re not alone. A growing number of clients choose to propose with a placeholder ring, and then visit our showroom together to create a custom engagement ring while visiting Bali.
What if she has very particular taste? Or you know she'd love to be involved in choosing the gemstone, metal and design?
A placeholder engagement ring lets you keep the proposal a surprise without committing to a design she hasn't seen. Propose with a simple ring, then make an appointment at our Sanur showroom to design the final one together.
You get to keep the surprise. She gets to pick the ring she’ll wear every day. Win-win.
You can look at natural diamonds and colored gemstones, try different ring styles, and talk about everything from durability to how the engagement ring will sit alongside a future wedding band.
The finished ring is made to your chosen design, with the correct measurements from the start.

Best for: Couples who want to share the experience of designing their engagement ring.
“I’ve been following Gardens of the Sun for years now and have dreamed of customizing my engagement ring alongside my partner. This ring means so much to me, and having it come from such a heartfelt business with people that truly care has been the best experience.“

An engagement ring is small, but the materials inside it have traveled a long way.
The diamond may have passed through several traders. The gold could have been mined years ago, melted down and traded through multiple countries. And the person who made the ring may have had very little information about either material.
A sustainable engagement ring starts with asking questions about that supply chain. Where was the gold mined? Was mercury or cyanide used? Who mined the gemstone, and how was it traded? What happens if the ring needs repairing in ten years?
We don't think recycled gold alone makes an engagement ring ethical. Recycling doesn't tell you how the gold was originally mined or traded, and it doesn't necessarily support miners who are trying to improve their practices today. That's why we've taken a different approach.
Our 18K gold starts with traceable, mercury free gold sourced from artisanal women miners in Indonesian Borneo. We work directly with mining communities and pay a premium for gold produced without mercury or cyanide.
Mercury is commonly used in artisanal gold mining to separate gold from other minerals. It is toxic to people and can contaminate surrounding rivers, soils and ecosystems.
Working with miners who don't use mercury helps support safer mining practices and creates a market for responsibly produced gold.
You can read more about our ethical gold sourcing and meet Ibu Gineng, one of the women behind our gold.
Our silver jewelry is made with recycled sterling silver. Sterling silver contains 92.5% silver, with the remaining 7.5% consisting of other metals that give it additional strength. We use recycled silver, since we haven't found a reliably ethical source for newly mined silver.
For everyday engagement rings, we generally recommend 18K gold over silver if your budget allows, particularly for delicate designs or valuable gemstones. Gold offers greater resistance to wear and deformation, although the design and alloy matter too.
We work with natural gemstones rather than lab grown alternatives. Our diamonds include stones mined in Indonesia (Java and Kalimantan), and we also source from countries such as Australia, Canada and Botswana.
Knowing where a diamond was mined isn't the same as knowing its color or clarity grade. It means having information about the people and businesses involved in its journey.
We want you to know more about your gemstone than its carat weight.
Gardens of the Sun became a Certified B Corporation in 2023. B Corp certification evaluates a company's social and environmental performance, accountability and transparency. It isn't a certification that guarantees every individual ring has zero environmental impact, but it does mean our commitments are assessed beyond our own marketing claims.
We believe an ethical jeweler should be able to explain their material sourcing, provide evidence where available, and be open about what they do and don't know.
That's the kind of transparency we'd encourage you to look for wherever you buy your engagement ring.
This is probably the most important question if you're visiting Bali for a holiday. A ready made engagement ring in the correct size can be yours the same day - either come to our showroom to see it in person first, or have it delivered to your accommodation. A custom engagement ring takes considerably longer, and even resizing a ring isn't necessarily something a jeweler can do overnight.
Here are the current timelines at Gardens of the Sun.
| Engagement ring option | Production time |
|---|---|
| Ready made ring in your size | Available from existing stock |
| Resizing an existing ring | 2–4 weeks |
| Custom recycled sterling silver ring | 6–9 weeks |
| Custom 18K gold ring | 8–12 weeks (+1 week for white gold) |
| Complex designs requiring prototyping | Allow 1-3 extra weeks |
If you're visiting Bali for a week or two, we'd recommend choosing a ring that's already in your size, proposing with a loose gemstone, or using a placeholder ring and designing the final engagement ring together afterward.
For a custom ring, it's worth starting the design process before your holiday. You don't need to be in Bali for the entire production period. We regularly work with international couples on custom ring designs through chat, video call and mockups.
Not all rings can be resized. Some designs, especially rings with pave or tension set gemstones, may not allow for resizing.
“Like every good love story, we wanted our wedding and engagement rings to be unique and true to the love that inspired them. That's a lot to ask of jewelry, and I truly believe that Gardens of the Sun is the only company that could live up to that lofty vision. Friends and family are sick to death of us talking about our rings, but every time I look at my finger I smile, and what kind of value can you place on that? The entire experience was a delight.“
- Ivor, Indonesia
You'll find jewelry shops throughout Bali, including in Ubud, Seminyak, Denpasar and the traditional goldsmithing village of Celuk. Some specialize in silver jewelry or large men's rings with agates, others in high karat gold, diamonds or custom wedding and engagement rings.
If you're looking for a fine jewelry ring that you'll wear for decades, we'd recommend choosing a jeweler who can tell you exactly what you're buying and who can explain their production process.
At Gardens of the Sun, you can visit our showroom in Sanur to explore ready made rings, loose natural gemstones and custom engagement ring options.
You'll be able to see our jewelry in person, hold the stones up in daylight, feel the weight of the bands, discuss different settings and precious metals, and learn more about the gold miners and gemstone suppliers we work with. And perhaps most importantly, you'll sit down with a jewelry designer just as excited about your story as you are.

Some couples know exactly what they want. Others arrive with a photograph, a gemstone color, or a rough idea and want help figuring out the rest. Both are welcome.
You can choose a ready made gold ring, browse our sterling silver engagement rings, or start with a custom diamond design.
We'll talk through the practical details too. Ring size, gemstone durability, setting height, metal choice and how the ring will work alongside a wedding band. And if you're already back home by the time your ring is finished, we can arrange international delivery and discuss the available shipping options. We've shipped to over 40 countries worldwide.
We love being part of proposals. But we also love the moment when someone tries on their finished ring, turns their hand to catch the light, and realizes it's exactly what they wanted.
Yes, you can buy real gold jewelry in Bali. But gold comes in different purities, and not every ring advertised as gold contains the amount of gold you might expect.
Gold purity is measured in karats. The higher the karat, the more pure gold the metal contains.
| Gold purity | Pure gold content |
|---|---|
| 24K | 99.9% |
| 22K | 91.7% |
| 18K | 75% |
| 14K | 58.5% |
| 9K | 37.5% |
The remainder is made up of other metals, called alloys, which influence the strength, durability and color of the gold.
A solid 9K gold ring is still real gold. And gold plated jewelry does contain a thin layer of real gold, although the material underneath may be brass, copper, silver, stainless steel or another metal.
The problem isn't that different gold purities exist. The problem is when jewelry is sold as solid 18K or 24K gold but contains substantially less gold than advertised.
For an engagement ring worn every day, we work with solid 18K gold because it balances a high gold content with the durability needed for fine jewelry.
Read more in our gold karat guide.
Not always. Just because a jeweler tells you a ring is 14K, 18K, 22K or even 24K gold doesn't mean that's what you're actually getting. And a hallmark stamped inside the ring isn't proof either.
Real 24K gold is almost pure gold, which makes it relatively soft. It scratches, bends and deforms more easily than lower karat gold alloys. So if a jeweler tells you a very thin, intricate engagement ring is made entirely from 24K gold, we'd certainly ask some questions, even if only for the long term wear consequences.
There are some worrying stories from travelers who've bought jewelry in Bali. In this Reddit discussion about engagement rings in Bali, one commenter describes encountering cases where people bought supposedly 18K to 24K gold in Denpasar, only to return to Australia and discover it tested below 9K, or worse: simply gold plated.
In another Reddit story, a traveler bought what they were told was sterling silver in Ubud. After returning home and having it tested, they reported finding mostly copper and zinc underneath a silver plating.
These are personal accounts, not independently verified laboratory findings. But they're good reasons to shop from reputable places or asking for verification of the gold content.
There are two common methods jewelers test gold purity in Bali. The first is scratch testing (touchstone and acid testing). The jeweler rubs the gold against a dark testing stone, leaving a streak of metal. Different acids are applied to the streak, and the reaction is compared with gold of known purity. It's inexpensive and widely used, but only provides an approximate result. It depends on the tester's experience and can be misleading with plated jewelry.
X-ray fluorescence (XRF) testing involves directing X-rays at the jewelry and measuring the signals emitted by the different metals. It can identify gold, silver, copper, nickel and other elements, and calculate their approximate percentages. It's faster, non-destructive and generally more precise than scratch testing, especially when properly calibrated.
But even XRF has limitations. It primarily examines the metal near the surface, so a thick layer of gold plating can sometimes hide a lower purity alloy underneath. In fact, GIA documented exactly this problem in 2025. One pendant submitted as solid 18K gold turned out to have a 10K gold base underneath an 18K gold plated surface. The plating could even cause an XRF instrument to overestimate the gold purity.
This isn't a problem unique to Bali. It happens elsewhere in the jewelry industry too.
Our advice? Buy from a reputable jeweler who knows the composition of their gold, can explain how it was tested, and is willing to show you proof in the form of test results.
At Gardens of the Sun, we're happy to share the laboratory report from our latest gold testing and explain exactly what was tested. Because when you're paying for 18K gold, you should be getting 18K gold.
You may notice that gold jewelry sold in Indonesia and other parts of Asia often has a stronger yellow color than gold jewelry you're used to seeing in Europe or the United States. In many Indonesian jewelry traditions, rich yellow gold is associated with high purity, and that influences the colors customers prefer.
But color alone isn't a reliable indication of gold content. Yellow and rose gold commonly contain copper and silver. More copper tends to create a warmer, pinker or redder tone, while silver, zinc and other metals can lighten the color.
White gold is mixed with metals such as silver, palladium or nickel to reduce the natural yellow color of gold. Nickel can cause allergic reactions in sensitive people, which is why we don't use it in our jewelry. Our 18K white gold uses palladium to create a naturally whiter alloy without needing rhodium plating.
Two rings can both contain 75% gold and look noticeably different because of the other metals in the alloy.
A trustworthy jeweler should know the metals used in their gold and be able to explain the composition.

Yes, although not every jeweler in Bali sells diamonds with GIA grading reports. The Gemological Institute of America, or GIA, is internationally recognized for diamond grading. Its diamond reports can provide information about the 4Cs: cut, color, clarity and carat weight.
There's no GIA diamond grading laboratory in Indonesia. Some jewelers stock diamonds that have already been graded by GIA, but having a new diamond graded usually means sending it to an overseas gem lab. That involves additional handling, insured international shipping, customs procedures and laboratory fees. Depending on the circumstances, import taxes and other costs may also apply. So expect to pay extra for a GIA certified diamond.
For natural Indonesian diamonds, local independent gemological laboratories can be a more practical option. We've worked with LPSB, a government owned laboratory in South Kalimantan, and South Kalimantan Gem Laboratory, a women-owned gem lab. Both have GIA Graduate Gemologists on their teams and have provided diamond reports for stones we've sourced.
A report prepared by a GIA-trained gemologist isn't the same as a GIA report. Each laboratory issues its own documentation, and the information and testing provided may differ.
Before purchasing, ask exactly what the report confirms, including whether the diamond is natural, its measurements, and which quality characteristics have been assessed. And remember that a jeweler's own certificate of authenticity isn't equivalent to independent laboratory grading.
If a diamond comes with an existing GIA report, you can check its details using GIA Report Check.
A GIA diamond certificate says nothing about a diamond's origin. A standard GIA diamond grading report describes a diamond's identity and quality. It doesn't automatically establish where the diamond was mined or whether the people involved in mining it were treated fairly.
There are specialized diamond origin verification services, but an ordinary grading report shouldn't be confused with evidence of responsible sourcing.
The same goes for diamonds described as "conflict free". That label alone doesn't guarantee environmentally responsible mining, safe working conditions or fair payment.
If ethical sourcing matters to you, ask where the diamond was mined, how it reached the jeweler, and what documentation supports those claims.
Diamond grading and gemstone traceability answer two very different questions.
You can find natural diamonds, lab grown diamonds and diamond alternatives in Bali.
Natural diamonds formed deep within the Earth over billions of years. Lab grown diamonds are manufactured using technology that produces the same crystal structure and chemical composition as natural diamonds. Both are real diamonds, but their origins and market values differ.
Moissanite and cubic zirconia are different materials that can resemble diamonds. If you're buying a more expensive natural diamond, ask whether independent laboratory documentation is available.
At Gardens of the Sun, we work exclusively with natural diamonds from known origins, including diamonds mined in Indonesia.
Not necessarily. A ring's price depends on the gold purity and weight, gemstone quality, design, production costs and the jeweler's pricing. You may find affordable handcrafted jewelry in Bali, but don't assume that a gold ring is a bargain simply because you're buying it in Indonesia.
Gold has an internationally traded market value, and diamonds vary enormously in price according to their characteristics. If one jeweler offers an 18K gold diamond ring for dramatically less than another, ask why. It could be a lighter gold band, a smaller diamond, a lower gold purity, a different gemstone, or gold plating rather than solid gold.
Whether you're buying a ready-made engagement ring in Seminyak, browsing jewelry stores in Ubud, or commissioning a custom gold ring in Sanur, these are the questions we'd recommend asking.
Is the ring solid gold or gold plated? Ask what the metal is made from, not just what color it is.
What's the gold purity? Is it 9K, 14K, 18K, 22K or 24K, and how has that been verified?
What other metals are used? Particularly important if you have nickel allergies.
Is the gemstone natural, lab grown or a simulant? Ask about any known treatments too.
When buying diamond jewelry, you can request an independent gemological report. Check who issued it.
Do you know where the gold and gemstones came from? A reputable jeweler should be open about the limits of their sourcing information.
Can the ring be resized or repaired? Some settings and styles are difficult or impossible to resize.
What is included in the final price? Ask about production, resizing, shipping, taxes and after sales services.
Will I receive the materials and specifications in writing? Make sure your invoice or order confirmation records what you're purchasing.
You're buying an engagement ring you'll hopefully wear for decades. It's worth asking a few extra questions now, so you can enjoy wearing it for years to come.
“I can’t thank Meri and the team enough for creating my dream engagement ring. The girls were so helpful in every stage; from advice about prong type and stone durability, to getting side stone position just right. I tell everyone who will listen about what a unique experience it was to have so much control over the design process, and how for me, it made the experience even more magical.”
